GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and MAC OS X.

Features:

  • Customizable Interface
  • Photo Enhancement
  • Digital Retouching
  • Many File Formats
  • Large Number of Supported Platforms

I love GIMP. Why? 1) I'm cheap. GIMP is free. 2) I have tried and tried and tried to use PhotoShop, but I just don't understand it. GIMP just makes sense. 3) It has really awesome filters and I love just messing around with pictures.

I used to have GIMP on my old PC but it soon caught the Blue screen of death.

Great Program is great.

GIMP annoys me.  It frustrates me that the windows overlay each other when one is in focus.  This makes it hard to view large images at full size and change brushes.  Also the brushes window has a lot of extra modifications that might confuse beginners.

Exactly, I started with GIMP and built up my techniqes, and now I moved on to PhotoShop CS3.  And CS3 is SOO much better, but because GIMP is free, IT IS AWESOME.

I love the GIMP. I have used it for 2-3 months now, and I am already able to do things I never though I could. After you get some cool brushes and fonts you can accomplish some REALLY cool things with GIMP.
