i wrote a text tutorial a long time ago and im gonna go look for it now for you.i think its on my old computer or lost in one of my old photobuckets, cant find it sorry. I would listen to marathon designs it seems like he knows what hes doing and im assuming he or she does this for a living. basically how i look at it is unless i am basing my entire design off of the text and it needs to have attention drawn to it then i am going to keep my text as out of the way and as simple as possible since you dont want it to distract viewers from the rest of your design. Just have the Text contrast with the rest of the design nicely and it will stand out. idk try to find some quick example of what i was talking about. in the first one its just me claiming ownership of the sig so it isnt really neccesary so i kept it simple and out of the way, usually i will try to hide things like this so only i know where they are since they arent really needed. But in the second design i made as a little banner for my friends band and without the name on there you would have no idea what its for. I mean you still probably dont but, whatever.
I havent looked at any tutorials in a long time even though i should since should catch up on newer styles but i always used to go to good-tutorials.com

adding some gloss to your text can also help bring it out. just dont go crazy. determine your light source first. I like doing it by hand, the built in effects dont always do it for me, so i use a fine brush with a low opacity but heavy flow and lightly brush over where some highlights would occur. it adds a subtle finish to your text that pops it out without making the viewer go "woah! there's a streak of white!" if you have a tablet to work with, you can add your shadow by hand also. makes it look great ^_^

Ugh, text effects. If you are going to buy a book, buy one on color theory. Text effects are fairly basic and aren't worth spending money on. The easiest way to make text seem to come off the page is a very slightly noticable drop shadow. To add that, go into PS, make ur layer with your text, then double click that layer. It'll bring up a new screen, go to drop shadow, click the box, then click the words and it'll bring up various options. Mess with the options to make it a nice gentle and only barely noticable shadow effect. As usual, if you have questions, feel free to contact me.

The easiest way to learn is via free tutorials. Try out deviantart.com. Also if you have questions about creating such designs, feel free to contact me and I'll help in any way I can. As a rule of thumb though, you rarely want to use emboss and 3D text effects for logos. Remember the saying K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

I can not name any books off the top of my head, but a drop shadow and bold text often works well.
