Java is a "meh" language to learn as a first language. It generally teaches you bad habits, and it doesn't let you FEEL THE CODE.

Ok, I'm curious, what sorts of bad habits do you think Java encourages? I didn't learn Java as a first language, I had a lot of C experience before learning Java so perhaps my foundation helped me avoid these bad habits. But I'd be interested in exploring and discussing this some more -- what bad habits do you think a programmer might fall into by choosing Java as a first language? Regarding your "FEEL THE CODE" statement, I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you're talking about how much it abstracts you away from the hardware -- devsnapshot started a nice discussion on that subject in this thread , come on over, we'd welcome your comments and participation!
