Yo Football_Star11! I could teach u some basics right now if you want. But 1st question: What type of music do u wanna go for? I'm into metal (Ex: Metallica, A7X, Ozzy, etc.) but I've been playing for 7 years now so I wanted to help people learn with my past experience.

The best thing you can do for yourself after learning the basics is get a good understanding of music fundamentals. Its not hard or confusing like alot of people might believe. Gaining a knoledge of music theory will allow you to go alot further with your guitar playing than just learning tabs. Im not saying you need to learn how to sight read music (asuming that you cant), but start by learning the major and minor scales, then learn what arpegios are and how to use them, and how arpegios and chords are related to scales and keys. A great resource is youtube, everything you could possibly need you can find there for free. Never pay for an online guitar lesson site, it will be the biggest regret of your life.

I know plenty of people who have become excellent guitarists using songbooks that teach you step by step and chord by chord, but I also know a lot of people who didn't use books, they would just learn a few chords and then piece them together. If you have any piano experience, you can learn songs by just listening for the root chords and playing them on your guitar. Tab sites that will display pictures of chords in songs are an excellent way to learn chords and how they sound together. It all depends on how you learn, but a guitar teacher is probably the easiest way to get started.

Websites and online lessons can be a stinking awesome way to teach yourself, and some of the tab websites are really helpful for figuring things out - ultimateguitar.com is a good one -, but if you're really interested in improving your playing, a real live guitar teacher is the place to go. Most music stores, and even a few chains - such as Kennelly Keys or Mills Music - offer lessons and often have amazing teachers. From my own experience, you're going to have much better odds at finding a good teacher at these places than a bad one. Just go down and ask around. The best part about it is if you ever get the the point where they can't teach you any more, they'll give you a number of a guy who's better than them! The thing with playing guitar is that no matter how good your gear or teacher is, you don't get better without practice - with a metronome - everyday. Steve Vai used to play for ten hours a day. When you play that much your fingers may start to bleed, which'll leave really cool blood stains on your guitar. You get better, and your guitar looks better - win/win situation. Hope this helps.
