There is now a lot of free, cheap and expensive software out there. There are also some websites that you can use. What does everyone like? A couple of my favorites are:

I've been using Final Cut for a while now. Got my Apple certification and I love it. The old iMovie was pretty good, but I would never consider Movie Maker. How about Avid Media Composer? Anyone use that?

Yeah, I'm all about Final Cut Express, it's a great alternative to the expensive FCP, and it does just about everything Pro does

I use Magix Edit Pro 15 Plus, which is easy to pick up but a lot of stuff to learn and explore. Now I am entering contests to earn enough money for when Final Cut Studio 3 comes out and the new Mac Pro.

u could also check out Virtual Dub, it's free and open source (last i remember) and it's helped me out in a pinch. It just takes a little to learn it (although it's linear). Final Cut Express isn't too bad (for Mac) and iMovie is easy to get the hang of (although some recent versions have been quite sucky if u ask me). I hate always bringing it up, but even the free, open-source 3D modeling suite Blender has a non-linear Video Sequence Editor that has a plethora of transitions and time effects, plus it's more visual (importing blocks and sequence strips that represent chunks of footage)--there's color correction and even green screen capabiities. Check it out and look at the mediawiki page for support.

surprised not to hear anything about adobe! been video editing for 10+ years, and i'm a big premiere pro fan, been using the cs3 version for a while. special effects can be done with after effects, too, if you're into that. if you're looking for something cheap, simple and easy, i suggest premiere elements.

Sony Vegas is pretty good for Windows. On Macs iMovie isn't bad, but if you've got the money Final Cut Studio 2 is amazing.

Cinellera is very good and very free. you have to be running Linux (or andlinux or such on windows) to run it though. Lives is also pretty good (and runs on Window) as is Kino (sorry, linux only again All of these are free and open source.

Seconding (or thirding) sony vegas if you're willing to pay - around 150 bucks for the whole suite I think. It's well worth it if you do any significant video editing or publishing to dvd. The basic programs like iMovie and Windows Movie Maker aren't that great.

i am a fan of apple's editing software. I generally use iMovie, but I am considering purchasing final cut express.
Online video editors aren't really for me. They're too slow and i don't really have a large enough usage quota to use them.

Sony Vegas is a nice editing software, not to expensive, and comes with a variety of digital effects.
