I used notepad, html, css, java, and a lot of php. They are website developing languages. There are a vast number of resources to help you learn to use them. Start at w3schools.com, they have good tutorials that helped me get started a few years back. Take it slow, it wont be overnight success. Pick a project, and then think to yourself: "how can I do this?" and work on doing it, you'll get there and it will feel good knowing you made a website without any third party program helping you out.
