Ok, maybe I got a little carried away with the title of this post. I mean, can you really run FreshBrain on a cell phone? Well, technically, the answer is "yes". If you have a web-enabled phone (and data access through your wireless service provider), you can visit http://freshbrain.org , just like you can visit any other web site. But today, the FreshBrain experience is really designed for a web browser running on a desktop or notebook computer, where we can use the larger screen to provide a nice user interface to FreshBrain's activities and tools.
But let's take a look at what FreshBrain is about: "Explore, Connect, Create". Connecting with others with similar interests and finding friends to work on projects with is one of the really important services provided by FreshBrain. And once you connect with these new friends, how do you stay connected? Well, lots of ways. You can use the forum, messaging, and blogging capabilities that are available on the FreshBrain site. You can update your status on your Facebook page, or write on somebody's wall. You can use a service like Twitter to send a quick update to friends who are following you. Or, most likely, you send a text message from your cell phone.
Allowing you to stay connected with friends is one of the things that cell phones do really well. You're not always at your computer, but your phone is always with you. So if you're heading out to grab a bite to eat, or going to the movies, or hitting the trail for a mountain bike ride, how do you let your friends know so they have a chance to join you? You have your phone, so you send text messages! Ok, that's great, but who do you send them to?
This is where things Facebook and Twitter are really cool. Rather than trying to figure out who will be interested and sending the message to all of those contacts, you turn it around: you publish your message to the world, and let your friends decide if they want to get notified. Twitter calls this concept "following"; you follow your friends, and when they update what they are doing, you hear about it.
So, what does all of this have to do with FreshBrain on your cell phone? Well, FreshBrain wants to stay connected with our community, so we have a Twitter account. If you want to get notified when cool things happen related to FreshBrain, just follow us on Twitter! If you're not yet a Twitter user, you can sign up (it's free) at http://twitter.com. If you are already using Twitter, just to go http://twitter.com/freshbrain, and click "follow". If you want Twitter notifications delivered to your mobile device (your cell phone), go to http://twitter.com/devices, and follow instructions to associate your phone number with your Twitter account. And if you're a Twitter pro, with your mobile device already enabled, you can follow us by texting "follow freshbrain" to 40404 from your cell phone!
(And be aware that standard text message rates apply. Twitter doesn't charge anything extra, but if your cell plan charges you to send/receive text messages, messages sent and received through Twitter do count against your plan. Before enabling your mobile device for Twitter, I would suggest that you read the Twitter phone FAQ at http://help.twitter.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=102)
