We met yesterday with a girl scout troop to get feedback on the project that we are working on with the girl scouts to virtualize their badges (they call them Interest Projects) on FreshBrian. This would mean that for the first time, the girls could complete their badges online, see the work that others have done, interact with girls outside of their troop or council, have access to new badges build with technology available on FreshBrain and learn 21st century skills thay will need to be successful.
This was a great experience. It was our first time testing the approach that we took to putting their badges up on FreshBrain. The girls were excited and amazingly helpful. Their comments were telling, but even more so was our ability to watch them complete the exercises that we had prepared.
The troop was on the younger end of seniors, with a few being 12, most 13 and one who was 14. All but the oldest were in middle school. The computer skills that these girls have varies widely as well. You could see that some are on the computer regularly on Facebook or MySpace, while others appear to rarely use one in any manner.
We collected feedback on everything from the registration process to the look of the virtual badges to the activities that make up the badges to how you submit to these activities. We have more work to do, but we are on the right path!
Next up - more testing and feedback from a troop leader and then with a troop of older girls.
