Posters for the People

I've been interested in WPA posters for a while now, in part because they were really the advent of the type of bold graphic design that now permeates American advertising.  I guess the big difference is that the WPA posters were about promoting core American democratic and social values instead of selling products.

There are so many, but here are a couple of my favorites:

Here's the Library of Congress database of WPA posters, but even if you just do a google image search or look on eBay for prints, you can find some particularly beautiful and funny ones.

There's an organization opening in Pennsylvania to preserve these posters, and they're having a design contest to create new posters in the style of the WPA.  This could be a great opportunity for anybody who's been beefing up their design skills during Summer Splash to take it to the next level.

Rock on, FreshBrains!

Look like propaganda posters in a way.
