I made this in Photoshop 5.0 with minimal filter use. I mostly used the eraser and brush tools at various settings trying to get it all juuust right.  I had to redraw portions of the hair that ended up being covered by the wires.  The sharpen/blur tool was used to create contrast in the background, as well as smooth out the model's face.  Some of the wires were images cited above, and some were just drawn in and shaded.  The brushes used made the circles.  Everything else was default photoshop brushes.  

About halfway through, my photoshop died on me, and I didn't save. All I had to work with was a printscreen I took at the last minute at 50% zoom, so I had a lot of extra work to do in order to get rid of the extra pixels and try to add a background.  

The main idea behind this design is that there is always a human element behind these mechanics, and the robotics technology area is designed to teach us how to do so, thus "building our minds".
