Description
In this activity you will apply the skills you have developed to create an art poster. The idea is to take an image of your own, and modify it so that it is in the style of a famous artist or well known piece of art. There is really just one rule: please start with a photo (or collection of photos) that you took yourself. Don't scan or take a photograph of a famous work of art and modify it; you must start with your own photo.
Use your imagination! Here are some ideas to give your brain a kick-start:- Take inspiration from a well-known style. For example, take a photo of a friend and turn into a recognizable poster.
- You don't have to stick with a painting. Take a photo of a friend or family member, and try to make it look like you visited a museum and took a photograph of a well known sculpture (but let's please keep everyone clothed!). Can you figure out how to make somebody look like marble?
- Take a photograph of a friend and turn it into an abstract portrait. Whoa, will people still recognize your friend after the Picasso treatment?
- Got some fruit around the house? Can you photograph it and give it this kind of style?
Basic Steps
- Take your photo. Remember some of the things from the early activities: Do you plan to blow up and print your finished image? If so, make sure you start with high enough resolution that it will blow up and still look smooth; think about how big you want your finished product to be and do some research (the forum is a good place to discuss this!). And remember color, framing, and perspective (high/low angles). You want to start with the best image you can capture. It's easier to turn a great image into great art than it is to start with a poor image.
- Load your photo into GIMP. Crop the photo if necessary. If you're planning to print, think about what size you want to print, you might want to crop your image to the same shape as your print.
- Start changing your photo. Think about what order you should do things. Remember to save often, so that if you make a change that you don't like it, you can always get back to your previous "good" version. And don't forget that some operations may have preview and undo options; use them!
- When you're finished, remember to submit your complete image so that the rest of us can see it! And in the Remarks section of the submission form, tell us a little about your creation, including some or all of the following:
- If there are people in your photo, who are they? You, your family, friends? (Only post this info if you are comfortable doing so, we're not intending to invade your privacy!)
- What was the model for your creation? Did you try to mimic the style of a famous artist? Did you try to emulate a specific work? Provide some web links of some works that we can compare to yours.
- What techniques did you use? Do you have any cool tricks that you'd like to share?

Welcome to the Digital Graphics Lab, where you will create cool art-quality images from your own photographs - no prior experience required!
